Stripped Gears

Problem:

Solution:

Gear mesh wrong.

Re-adjust gear mesh.

Explanation

The mesh between spur gear and pinion gear teeth is critical. If they are too loose, then the metal pinion gear may swiftly chip away the outer portion of the softer spur gear teeth.

Quick Check

To check if your gear mesh is wrong, do the following.
1. Rock the spur gear back and forth in the clutch bell using only light pressure of your small finger. The gear should be able to move just a small amount without moving the clutch bell.

2. If you cannot move the spur gear without also moving the pinion gear (because the gear mesh is tight), then the gear mesh needs to be changed.

3. If you move the spur gear but the mesh allows more than a couple sheets of paper to fit between the mesh of the gears, the mesh may be too loose, and the mesh needs to be tightened.

Step-by-step help

If gear mesh is the problem, do the following.
1. Loosen the motor mount screws so the motor can be slid forward and back.

2. Slide the motor so the pinion gear teeth meshes with the spur gear teeth.

3. Keep shifting the motor until you can rock the spur gear back and forth in the clutch bell using only light pressure of your small finger. The gear should be able to move just a small amount without moving the clutch bell.

4. When the gear mesh is set as in step 3, tighten down the motor screws.
