Stiles Clinches AMC Summer Shootout Series With Round 3 Win!

Reedy-supported drivers have enjoyed success racing 1:12 scale in the UK recently, and last weekend saw a continuation of that trend.

Round 3 of the popular Action Model Centre-supported Summer Shootout Series saw a healthy entry despite the fantastic weather that threatened to keep drivers outside and away from indoor racing events in the UK. The Open Modified 1:12 class included six BRCA national A-finalists and several previous national event winners, so competition for the top places was intense.

Several drivers showed good pace during qualifying including Reedy factory driver Mark Stiles, who consistently ran at or near the front of the field to eventually qualify second on the grid. Mark was narrowly out-paced by Mick Farrell in the last qualifier and missed TQ by a little more than 1 second.

A strong result in the final would be enough to give Mark the overall series title, having won both of the previous two rounds. The final started cleanly and the leading pair immediately began to break away from the field. On lap nine, a minor mistake from Mick allowed Mark to slip through into the lead, after which Mick piled on the pressure in an enthralling race for both competitors and spectators. Despite the pressure from behind, Mark defended his position and eventually crossed the finish line in first place, just 0.7 seconds ahead of Mick. Adam Catchpole was a further six seconds back from the lead pair.

Three wins from three events gives Mark the Summer Shootout trophy with a round to spare; a title previously won by the likes of David Spashett, Andy Griffiths, and Chris Kerswell. With the title in hand, Mark can push for a series sweep at the final round of the series next month.
