"What do people need to know most about how to tune their gas engines? "

Move the screws in very small increments.

Don't turn the screws in large increments turn them in very small increments.

what their engines temperature is, that makes or breaks how it runs.

They need to know what the high mid and low needles are for and their jobs, and how much clutches play a roll in engine tuning.

ALWAYS CHECK THE TEMPERATURE, EVERY TIME YOU RUN THE ENGINE. DO NOT LET IT OVER HEAT.

Patience...a lot of patience. Take your time in tuning the engine. Follow the instructions of the engine manufacturer. That will help you in the long run.

They need to know which way to turn the lean/rich screw

Make sure you run them on the Rich side, a little less performance but the lifespan will be increased.

Leave it alone, if it runs smooth, isn't over heating, and top speed is decent. Adjusting the carb to squeeze out hp will just ruin your engine when that one time you over do it.

Get plenty of glow plugs

to pick the correct glow plug. quality & heat range.

well I work at martys hobbies, and I am the mechanic who tunes cars. I say the high speed goes for speed/temperature, and the low speed is for altitude/off the line. and keep a smooth power curve

do not keep your engine on a lean setting as it will wreck your engine for life

ask an experienced person who has tuned engines for help

Make sure glow plug is good, have a accurate temp gauge on hand, run it a lil on the rich side, and LISTEN and LOOK on how it performs!!

Only tune one screw a little at a time. You can easily reverse what you've done . If you adjust them all at once you'll never know which one helped.

temperature ranges for their engine.

The Temp, of course!

It's better to be rich than too lean.

Temperature affects needle settings...be prepared to alter your settings before every run, sometimes even during a run.

Proper break in, and warm up procedures.

small moves of the needles at running temperature

clean your engine after the day at the track or where ever u drive at.

THERE ARE A LOT OF FACTORS THAT PLAY INTO EFFECT WHEN TUNING NITRO ENGINES!... FIRST OFF YOU NEED TO ALWAYS TUNE YOUR ENGINES TO MAINTAIN WITH A REASONABLE TEMPERATURE RANGE...USUALLY WITHIN 220 DEGREES F. TO 260 DEGREES F, DEPENDING ON WHAT PERFORMANCE YOU DESIRE. I HAVE PERSONALLY RACED ENGINES UP TO 260 DEGREES F. FOR UP TO 6 GALLONS. AND STILL HAD GOOD COMPRESSION AFTERWARDS! BUT ALWAYS START OUT WITH A RICH SETTING RATHER THAN A LEAN SETTING AND TUNE OUT FROM THERE. ALSO ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GLOW PLUG. I USUALLY CHANGE MINE EVERY RACE NIGHT BEFORE I RACE AND RECHECK MY TUNE TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN A SAFE TEMP. RANGE AND STILL PERFORMING THE WAY I LIKE! YOUR PLUGS' COIL WILL BE DISTORTED OR MAYBE BURNT, WHITE, USUALLY FROM RUNNING IT TOO LEAN. THIS IS A SIGN TO CHANGE IT!

its a good idea to invest in a way to measure engine temp. too rich is safer than too lean, but best performance comes on the crest of too lean.

Read the instruction manual

run it rich (high speed needle) when warming up, then start leaning it out for maximum power.

The most important thing that people need to know about tuning their gas engines is to always keep up with the proper maintenance. a clean nitro vehicle really does run better, and it is better not to have to buy a new engine because you were to lazy to use after-run oil.

Their engines running temp.

1: They need to know which screw does what. 2: they need to know which direction is which 3: they need to know which side of the spectrum they are at (ie rich or lean)

Read the manufacturer's instruction manual as it is generally right on the mark. And do not change any setting but in small increments.

what the "high" and "low" needles do and HOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT!! (and to tune one at a time)

How to keep the mixture from being to lean, and trashing the engine

Keep an eye on exhaust smoke. It will tell you more about an engine than feeling the temp., listening to it, or dropping water on the head. You want to see white smoke even when under full throttle at top speed, if not, then richen her up.

You can't tune an engine with dirt in it, don't forget those filters
