1998 Question of the Week:

"What’s more important, top speed or handling?"

Handling is more important because all the speed won't get you through the rough stuff krkroupa

HANDLING...... Speed will do you more harm then good if you can't put your car in the right place.

Have Fun, Dave Barber

What's more important for novices is handling. Now for "PROS" speed is more important because that's just about time when little things on your car break more easily. Team "Break-A-PART"

Who cares how fast you can go if you can't make the hair-pin turn at the end of the strait-a-way!!

It depends on what type of racing you are doing. For instance I race off road on a tight curvy track. I want more handling. When I race a more open long straight away track I want a little more speed. When I do race on road, I want all out speed. But I really don't do much on road driving so when I do I want to get all the speed out of my system. If I was to actually road race more handling. Oval racing, more speed. So in short it depends.

Well handling is more important than top speed. If your car does not handle right then what is all that speed going to do for you. Your car may be the fastest one out there. But if is not putting in fast laps times then it is pointless to be a rocket down the straightaway.

Factory pilot Travis Amezcua

They are both important! But I would recommend that you have good handling before you pick up the speed unless you like crashing!!!

Handling, if the fast ones crash, you can go around them, both would be great.

If your set up to handle properly then you can look for more speed. Horse power with out traction and control is not the answer.

Handling by far; if your set up properly the speed comes naturally. My lap times are always faster with a stock motor over a modified.

Handling. I was watching this guy race & thought something was wrong with his truck. So Slow!!

He won all four heats and the final. Control is everything.

-Sam

Handling, without it, Top Speed is useless.

HANDLING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. YOU HAVE TO PUT THE TIRES ON THE GROUND BEFORE YOU CAN USE YOUR SPEED.

i think that they are both equally important, if the car doesn't handle the speed is useless, if the car handles yer gonna get smoked down the strait

X-----------

I would say that speed is important but handling is the most important thing. trying to find an area in between is what i try to find every time i race.

Handling is more important....once you get smooth, fast comes all by itself......

handling no question about it!!!

Handling is the most important. You can have all the speed in the world, but if you cannot handle properly and are flying all over the track your speed means nothing. Take it slow, and carve that track, and guaranteed you will be "faster" in the end!

RCMits Yamahata

Handling-top speed is good for bashing, but for racing, handling is more important. Your car can go faster if it can stick to the track than if it slides through all the corners.

If your car won't handle how can you get to top speed without spinning out or hitting the wall!

I believe that handling is more important than just top speed , reason being you have to go slower to go faster , you can beat a lot of cars on the track if yours handles super on corners going into and out of them, that way you save time on the part of the track with the most turns and use that saved time for the straights, because you do not have true top end it is best to have a well balanced, tuned, adjusted, maintained car reliable batteries and charger and a good gear ratio or just in case you are running a two (2) speed transmission.
LAST but not forgotten, practice is very important, you should practice often with the car set up you like most given the circumstances of weather barometric pressure wind velocity air temperature humidity and others like track conditions and mood of the marshals that day HA HA HA HA HA . jJONAS BEN MONTREAL

BOTH ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE U HAVE TO HAVE BOTH TO WIN RACES BELIEVE ME I KNOW

Handling is more important to me just for the simple fact that...one must be able to control one's car before it can go faster. THE ARTIST

Instead of depending on track conditions or size, I think it depends where your car currently is. If you're in back, you would want to yank out everything your car has, no matter if you're crashing into everything or not. If you're out there in the front, you'll drive smooth, steady, and for performance. Its comes naturally.

Proper Handling is definitely an advantage over top speed. You can put a 2 turn motor in a Tamiya Grasshopper and it will be fast!!!!!

you have to have a balance of speed and handling depending on which track to win a race. you have to able to control the car and have speed for the straights.

I feel handling and and driver skill is more important than speed. I have one of the fastest trucks at my track but rarely win because i have a handling problem and lack driving skill. I am getting better though. (i can't get any worse.)

Handling for off-road. If your car doesn't handle well you won't be able to control the car under high speeds.

Handling = fast lap times. Top Speed = crashes, frustration etc. Get the handle on it, then GO FAST!!!!

Handling definitely!!!!!! All the speed in the world won't get you to the finish line if you can't keep the car on all four wheels around the track

The Rugspinner

I would say it depends on where and how you race. On short & tight tracks I would say handling more than speed. Large/wide open tracks would appear to require more top end speed. I consider handling key on the tracks I run on.

Handling is more important. You can have the fastest car on the track, but if it pushes around the corners another racer with a slower car can sneak under you and pass you up. Sure you might be fast in the strait line, but you'll get killed in the turn where most of the passing is done.

Handling and top speed are both very important factors in RC car racing. I would have to say that handling is a bit more important though. With an extremely fast car with poor handling you will spend more time flipped over and off the track than racing. I believe handling is more important. Stick with associated for high top speed and superb handling. -Nick Dell-Des Moines, IA

Handling! What is speed if you cant keep all four wheels on the ground.

Top speed is good, but you'll never win unless the car/truck/buggy handles correctly. So I think it's more important to be in control than to have speed but speed is a close second....

Handling for sure. I saw a guy race with a really slow car and he got first place in all the heats.

Handling by far. If you can't make it around the track without slamming the wall from a bad push What's the use of having the speed.

T3 Terror

handling most definitely, you can have all the speed in the world, but a good handling car will beat you every time, guaranteed!!!!!

Handling is more important. If you can't drive it you can't be fast.

Handling is by far the more important aspect of a R/C car i have seen many times the fastest car at the track lose to a much slower car because the "fast guy" couldn't keep his car under control. If you get your car Handling good and learn to drive it the speed will come.

handling with out it all the speed in the world will not help you if you car/truck can't turn

Handling because speed doesn't matter, it's consistency. My T3 is equipped with 16 triple, my dad has a 13 triple and I always beat him, and he was a "pro" racer.

Depends on the track. Tracks with short straights, I believe, should emphasize handling characteristics. Bigger tracks with long straights do benefit from top speed since these enable the car to accelerate to its fullest. In a smaller track the time spent going fast and straight is much less than the time spent in the circuit part of the course where the real benefits of a good handling car can be realized. However, given the choice I would like to have both, speed and handling.

One of the first things I was taught about racing was that speed isn't everything. That is some of the best advice I have ever received. What does speed matter if ya can't turn?

POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL!!!!

I'll say both are important. Depending on the track, you'll give more importance to one than the other. Keep in mind that even a piece of wood handle well at low speed.

Hilaire Anaco, Venezuela.

It all depends on the track, if its a tight track with lots of turns and not so many long straight always then handling is the best for you. On the other hand if it is a track with few turns or not too many tight turns and has many straight always then top end speed is best. -Charles Calvin

yes, all of the above are critical to winning races. for instance if you have no handling, all of the speed in the world won't do you any good and conversley all of the handling in the world won't do you any good if you have no speed. so, practice on both and learn the theory's behind the success of each category.

What good is speed if you cannot control where you go.

I think Handling is way more important than top speed because if you don't have the handling, then you cant expect your car to have the top speed.

Handling is usually much more important than speed. You will turn faster laps when your car handles correctly and not crash because you can't control the speed you have. If your car doesn't handle, you can't go fast.

You need to balance high speed with handling and maneuverability...first you gotta learn to maneuver your car and handle it well. Once you got that down, it's time to crank up the speed!

Top speed is only relevant to a race when a driver can control it. I would have to say handling is most important. Get the vehicle dialed in first and then work on getting some speed out of that sucker

Handling is more important, go as fast as you want if you can't go straight or your RC is all over the place Then all of your top end speed is wasted because you'll have to slow down to get your RC under control

Handling is more important, because if your car handles better than one at top speed, you will always be able to keep up, because your car will be more consistent.

More handling is definitely more important because once you get that down you can add some speed.

I run a 180 foot banked concrete oval... and I must say that both are important. If you can't make it through the corners... you won't be able to make a lot of speed in the straightaways. By the same token, if you're handling great, anything you gain in the corners you can lose in the straights if your top speed isn't that great. You have to try and find a happy medium in order to win.
