1998 Question of the Week:
"What's the best way to introduce newcomers into R/C racing?"
I think that a good way to get newcomers into R/C is by having A special class at local tracks for entry level trucks and buggies with no high end trucks allowed. Unless AE decides to come out with an entry level vehicle, I think that this would be fair. It would have to be just like the stock class, because newcomers want it to be cheap and fun.
let them drive your car
To get new racers into the hobby, there needs to be a friendly, helpful environment. Also, there needs to be a beginners type class so that they do not have to spend a lot to find out if they like the sport or not. Clint Tredway Dallas Texas
Start out with a cheap car or truck this will be your learning stage. Then when your ready start out with TA team kit it will save you the hassle bushings bring with them! Start with electric first gas is more expensive! Then get a RC10GT and your finished on your journey thru R/C LAND..
I LET NEWCOMERS DRIVE MY VEHICLES AROUND THE TRACK A FEW TIMES. YOU CAN SEE IT IN THERE EYES! MOST OF THE TIME THEY'LL GO STRAIGHT TO THE HOBBY SHOP AND TRY TO BUY SOMETHING IN THERE PRICE RANGE. IT'S A GOOD FEELING KNOWING YOU HELPED SOMEONE!!!
If someone new shows up at your racetrack, always, always talk to them. Always go out of your way to talk to them, ask them if they have any questions, just treat them like you know you would want to be treated in the sport, sorta like most racers started out??
Let them see how much FUN it is to drive your truck or car
The first thing you do is get them to come to a race. Second thing you can do is try to sell them a used R.C. car. krkroupa
I figure that the best way to get started with Rc racing is to find a friend or someone in Rc racing and like learn a few trick of the trade and it help's you out a little bit and you wont mess up your equipment which i have been know to do from time to time. DazzeR
Those who like real racing are the easiest to recruit. I say be friendly, helpful, and always display good sportsmanship. If this doesn't work, let them try your vehicle once or twice. If they still aren't interested, they're probably dead!
Last year I got my neighbor and his son involved with off road just by taking them to the track and showing him it is a family sport. We race at Intermountain R/C Raceway in Magna Utah. Dave and Terresa run a great facility and always stress that we are there to have fun. Also it was really great to get to know Rob Gullespe and other racers who always come to your side when you need help with the car. I had never been involved in a sport where so many were willing to help.
anything as long as it doesn't involve him\her driving your own R\C car.
How would you get newcomers into the R/C Hobby? Take them to a local race and show them how much fun it is, or let them try out your car. Just one try can get anybody hooked!!!
Let them try your car out!! I had an old rc10t and let one of my friends have it, because I was using my new T2. He got hooked instantly! He in turn got jealous of my T2 and got one himself. He then gave the truck to someone else, who is now also hooked!!!
Let them try your vehicle for a battery pack or two. Let them know that it is a hobby that teaches many skills and they can also satisfy the need for competition if they so choose. Also let them know they can get into the hobby very inexpensively, they don't have to start with the best equipment, they can upgrade at any time they choose. if you can take them to a race and let them race in a novice class with your equipment, you may gain a friend as well as a new R/C hobbyist....Don
I'll said lets keep running them as much as we can. Every one close to me is getting involve in it and do not get in either because he cannot afford it or because I'm not always in place. Let's just keep running them.

Hobby stores should advertise and let people run a few cars and/or trucks on their tracks or in their parking lots. The only reason I bought mine was that my brother in law let me drive his Tamiya Blackfoot. I've been hooked ever since! Bob
take them to see the races. Isaac Johnson, MN
A great way is to show them the fun you have with your car a local track and show them how fast your car is or how much ground clearance you got off the ground and then let them try to do the same thing you did.
Simply by letting them see one running or even better.. take them to the track and show them how much fun it could be. Usually if they're not sold by then, don't bother cause it just don't suit them or they'll waste their money on something they don't really want to do.
Have an entry level class, or for real newcomers have rent a car things like they do at MnM raceway,or let them drive yours
X-----------------
First, take them to your local track on race night. If that isn't enough then let them drive your tricked out Associated product. It worked for me. I was very skeptical of gas until I drove my friends RC10GT. After that I had one the next week!
show them a well built, high quality car or truck kit that they can get for less than $220 with everything they need to run and maintain it.
take your friend to the R\C raceway so he can see how much fun it is
I would tell them to go to a hobby shop and get educated with the kind of RC cars there and then ask them if they have any ideas about what radio controlled car they want.
I personally would have to say hands on experience, or go to a race or practice. Both of those are ways I got hooked
Offer good, quality cars that can compete in the stock class for a reasonable price.
