1998 Question of the Week:

"What are the pros and cons of 4 wheel drive?"

The good thing about 4WD is better traction in corners and on loose dirt. The bad thing about 4WD is 1. more moving parts means more friction and less speed. 2. one more diff to adjust and worry about. 3.shaft drives are ok at times. Belt drives get loose after awhile and are a real pain to work with. 4. more expensive when you come down to replacing parts its a killer on the wallet $$$ . I don't own a 4WD but these are the things I have heard from people who have them!

well that's kind of a hard one to answer, but the pro side would be that the 4wd are "damn fun" to drive and in most cases easier to drive but not all the time but if your into the "grip it and rip it" way of driving you'll have fun (but don't take anyone else out) remember have fun!!! now the con side for one the maintenance is much higher! and set ups are a little more tricky which could discourage some but don't give up!!!

Never ran 4 wheel, looks fun though, I think that the best thing about 4 wheel is its fast and it just looks cool, kinda crappy thoughts on it, but oh well

With 4WD, your maintenance costs DOUBLE!

pros of 4wd is mostly more traction and handling. also another pro is the introduction of "drifting" or "power sliding". these options add very much fun factor, performance, and race-ability into RC cars. the cons of 4wd consists of high costs, hard maintenance, difficult tuning, and weight increase.

4wd is great traction wise, but it adds more rotating mass for the motor to deal with

easy...the 4wheel Drive means you can have more traction when it is needed...and your front wheels are not having to be pushed because they are rotating in sync with the back, taking a load off of the Drive train in the back. But the 4wheel drive is also a Pain to Work on...has more maintenance , and is generally a more expensive kit...

4WHEELING GIVES YOU MUCH BETTER STEERING, ACCELERATION, TRACTION, AND JUMPING ABILITY. THE ONLY REAL CONS ARE THAT IT MIGHT BE HARD TO GET THE FRONT TIRES AND THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE SADDLE BATTERIES. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT OFF-ROAD HERE, RIGHT?

the 4wd cars look really cool and their really popular. the competition is much tighter and they are in general very fun to drive.

4wheel drive is the fastest of the electric off road classes and subsequently puts the most pressure on batteries and motors. Probably the reason that a certain US manufacturer has waited until the release of Sanyo's 2000 cells before starting production. The extra maintenance is major pain in the backside. I don't think that the costs would be double though. On the topic of 4wheel drives can Associated pleasssssse design a new 1/8th on road gas car.

I've read the previous answers. They are all OK. Anyway, talking about perfs, the 4WD is the best in the turns and at the acceleration while the 2WD is better at top speed.

On the pro side I would say increased steering and different handling. BIG AIR capabilities, lots of fun to race. On the con side there is alot more things to break and clean. More maintenance!!! Team No Fear Racing

Pro's: With 4wd, the car's cornering is much more forgiving, (you can go much faster into and around a corner) more traction all around the track and usually better handling over all.

Cons: Costs significantly more, you go through more tires more often, if you can't drive a mod then you probably can't compete, more maintenance.

4wd is fun. The maintenance is considerably more and upkeep is more ( belts etc. ) I would recommend for a seasoned RCer over someone new in the sport. As well initial cost is more for kits....Don

PROS-4WD cars handle turning (especially on slippery surfaces) much better than 2WD cars. 2WD off-road cars "fishtail" around corners, while 4WD's glide around corners since the front wheels are pulling the car. Overall better traction and handling on slippery surfaces is gained with a 4WD car. CONS-4WD cars are heavier and require more power than 2WD cars thus runtime isn't as long. Also 2WD cars will have a higher top end speed because the motor/engine is only turning 2 wheels rather than 4. The fastest cars in the R/C world (dragsters) are only 2WD because speed is needed more than handling.

The pro's are they handle well and are a lot of fun to drive...the con's are they are expensive and somewhat complex for beginners.
