1998 Question of the Week:
"Which is better and why, pull start or non pull start engines?"
I've found a pull-start engine to be the best, because you don't need to spend money to buy a starter, or make the car heavier with an on-board electric starter.
I WILL TAKE A NON PULL START ENGINE EVERY TIME. EVEN WHEN I RUN A PULL START ENGINE, I WILL USE A STARTER BOX.
Well I like Pull-Starts engines because you don't have to bring those most ugly starter boxes with you every time your R/C car stalls somewhere! Downside to pull-starts is they don't rev as high as non-pullstarts. And If you just got a RC10GT and watched the video don't try to stop the flywheel on your RC10GT with your fingers. I burnt my fingers trying that stunt it hurts!!
A non pull start for sure! I started with a pull starter and the next week I built myself a starter box that has the motor, glow panel, battery, fuel pump, and fuel jug for around $75.oo, I also put a door on one end and use the box to store and transport my truck to the track. Having a starter box makes the wonderful world of nitro power a lot more enjoyable. I almost gave it up that first week, I managed to bust everyone of my knuckles at least twice. Nothing is more aggravating than a temperamental engine, but having a starter box makes it alot easier. Also, the non pull start engines weigh less, and with less weight you go faster!!!!!

non-pull start because you don't have to have to have two people to start the car.
Pull start better when engine starts quickly. Fouled or flooded plug makes NPS better.
I have owned both and even though the pull start is nice to have it's not very durable and the ropes break too easy. I think It's easier to use a starter box or a bump starter on a non-pull start engine. Plus the fact that a pullstart assembly drops the power level by 10%. Kelly
Non pullstart because the car runs better, lighter, and is easier to start with a good starter box. And you also don't have that annoying pull start that always breaks on the weekend.
non pull start. Pull starts break too easy. They are corny anyway ... it's not a --- lawn mower !
Pull starts give you the ease of quick starting. Non pull starts are lighter but require a start box. I have a pull start on my RS4 Nitro Mini and it works great. I have a non pull start on my RS4 Nitro Racer and find that i have trimmed 12g off my chassis.
a non pull start, because it starts faster
Non-pull, Lower center of gravity less weight, no drag from pull mechanism

Non-pull start engines seem better suited for racing because you no longer have all that added weight of the pull start hardware. And as every racer knows that a lighter car is a faster car.
I have had both in my RC10GT. The pull start was a simple introduction into nitro powered R/C, however there were days when I could not start my truck. It ended up being a crap-shoot whether I would be able to run my truck. After a year and a half and one blown engine later, I upgraded to a more powerful non-pull start engine. Now I run my truck when-ever I want. The starter box adds another $100 to the price of admission, but quickly pays for itself with easy starting.
Pull starts basically suck, and they cost more too. Starter boxes are not that expensive any more.
non pull start. cause without the pull start you can get the car running faster
a non pull start engine. They say pull start create a drag on the engine and makes it slow. Plus non pull starts engines are cheaper
NON PULL START OF COURSE. IT REV's UP MORE AND IT's LIGHTER.. I NEVER BOTHERED USiNG A PULL START ENGINE.. THEY'RE WEAK AND BREAK TOO EASILY. IF YA GOT A GOOD STARTER BOX AND A GOOD ENGINE, iT'LL START FASTER THAN A PULL-START.... AND WHAT DO THE PRO's USE???
I own an RC10GT and have had both types of motors...the pull start is definitely best for back yarders but for me non pull start is definitely the best. For non racers the pull start offers convenience of not having to haul an extra piece of equipment (starter box) to the field, it also is less of an expense. we all know with gas cars you have to bring enough stuff along with you. But for the racers or potential racers the non pull start is the way to go. it offers lower weight, lower center of gravity since the motor can sit lower in the chassis (smaller flywheel and shorter motor mounts). also on race night its much less work and much faster to start on a box. Another advantage is you don't have to remove the body to start it. Always a time saver when a hard start can make you late to a qualifier. Both types of motors have their pros and cons, but for racing lighter is always better. good racing aaron eslinger
pullstart because you have to keep on buying rubber wheels for the starter box that's another thing why spend money on laziness
you're corny and so are all the rest of you that say non pull start
GO WITH PULL START IT ROCKS
pull start would be cheaper but harder to start
I have found that none pull start engines are alot easier to start, but if you are in a remote location where a battery supply for the starter box is not available, pull start is the way to go.
I think a pull start is better because if the engine dies you can go run out in the street with a glow igniter and start it again instead of having a big old starter box to hall around.
A pull start because of it's lower price and convenience
I originally had a pull start engine on my RC10GT. I thought personally it stunk! I now have a starter box. IT'S GREAT!! It's an OFNA #10250 (one new hole has to be drilled in the box to mount the motor so the rear wheel can hang off but it's no big deal.)
I used to own a Pull Start. I went through 3 pull start units in two months at a cost of $20 a pop. Get a starter box for under a $100.
I would have to say non for me because I seam to be hard on everything else that has a pullstart, and I do have a team 10GT that I use for circle track
I originally had a pull start on my GT but after an unfortunate accident, a good story for later, I purchased a non-pull start. At first I swore, trying to line up the fly wheel with my starter's wheel (I had a hand held starter) but after I bought a Dynamite starter box I have had no problems at all. From experience I think a non pull start is easier to start than a pull start. Also there is less weight and I didn't have to worry that I was about to pull the cord off of the engine.

I was racing nitro vehicles for a long time. I was using an RC10 GT and a GTX. Both of the trucks had pull starts and both of the trucks graced the winners circle several times. For me the pull start was cheaper and more convenient.
non pull start because i've broken many of pull starts in the past and i'm sick and tired of rebuilding pull starts every time i run the thing. the non pull starts however all you do is put them on the box and bump it and it runs. that's why i like non pull starts.
Even though I don't use gas engines, I'd still like to help you on this one. My answer would be: it's a matter of personal preference. Pull starts are pretty good, but keep in mind that the pull start mechanism is extra weight. Also some non-pull start engines (if not all) put out a little more horsepower than their pull start counterparts (that is, if they have a pull start counterpart). If I was looking for pure performance, I'd go for the non-pull start, even though I'd also have to buy one of those bulky starters. However, If I was looking for convenience and was just messing around, I'd definitely pick the pull start.
I have found that a non pull start motor works for me. My non pull start gives me more horsepower than my old pull start, and plus I think their easier to start. Another good reason is less weight.

Pull start engines are quicker to start and cost a good deal less in the long run. Non-pull start engines have more power, but you have to carry around those heavy starter boxes. I'd have to go with a pull-start for convenience, but for serious racing non-pullstarts are much better.
BIG HYME Austin
For fun and play the pull start is great, no battery to carry or starter box, a few tugs and you're off and running. But for competition go with a non pull start engine. It will develop more power, less rotating mass (pull start) and less chance that when you need to start you engine, there are no broken ropes or recoil mechanisms.
