1998 Question of the Week:

"What tuning area of your kit(s) do you find the hardest to set up for the track?"

figuring out when to use shock downstops

I find that the suspension is the hardest. I prefer off road and depending of the track conditions and the weather; the surface is a bit tough to predict.

I would say that finding the proper toe-in and camber is the hardest for me, I started three years ago and still can't get it right.

I found setting up the suspension the biggest obstacle in the way to make my car handle correctly.

the hardest is all the camber link adjustments and the changes they cause.

Well on my RC10GT with a HPI 15 ss. engine. The shock setup was the hardest for my track . The factory springs were too soft so I went with F.silver & R.blue for big bumps and stayed with 30wt oil with stock piston spacers. Other than that I put the T3 slipper clutch which is a big improvement over the old RC10 original type clutch! Good luck with your racing guys and gals!! Fiero_Rob P.S. Hurry up TA with the new sedan; I'm getting itchy to race it!!

The Piston, shock oil, and the camber rod location in no particular order.

The camber, toe-in on the front, and the right tires.

I find that setting the proper shock settings are difficult (oil, piston, mounting position, etc.)

The hardest thing to setup on my offroad racers is the suspension. I like my racers like i like my women, VERY LOOSE. But that does not always work for me. I race at Hobby Warehouse of Sacramento and was wondering if you could send me some info on setups for this track. Thanks.

Tires! It's easy to find out which ones to use but you end up breaking the bank in the process.

suspension

I'm not sure that 'hardest' is the word, but the most important area where the most time should be spent is on tyres. I would estimate that 70%-80% of the car's setup is in the tyres and no amount of suspension tuning and geometry adjusting will resolve an incorrect tyre choice.

I think the hardest is actually to determine the size of the of the pinion gear that you need

I don't know because I haven't taken mine out to the track yet since the weather in Wisconsin sucks.

Suspension is pretty hard to set up. Finding the right pistons, shock oil, and springs can be a real pain. Even when you have all different kinds of suspension options, I hate having to change them so many times and then test it out on the track. Tires are also a tough choice. It took me awhile to find the right kinds for my Nitro RS4 Racer on the track I race at.

The tweak screws on my RC10L2O

Every time I try to setup my car, I always end up a lot slower in lap times. I tried the things everyone says but it always seems to be the opposite of what I really need to do. I have problems in all areas.

The tuning area of kits that I find the hardest to set up for a track is the anti-squat. Without being into full-size vehicles, I do not understand what that does, so it makes it hard to change it.

I find the suspension difficult to set up. I am somewhat inexperienced in setting up shocks, plus I have a T3. I heard they are hard to set up anyway, let alone being able to properly tune them. I race on a hard packed blue-groove track, so setup is extremely important. Please help me!!

[Associated responds: Give us a call and we'll get you set up in no time. You'll need to give us the track length, track surface conditions, the track conditions you are having trouble with, your present tire choice, and fill out a setup sheet of your current setup.]

rear traction and push in front. that's on trucks. cya

rear wheel camber

the camber and gearing

Correct shock valving, oil weights and shock angles. Very time consuming with sometimes nebulous results.

Steering and handling the curves.

Definitely the shocks. Swapping pistons, and changing springs and spring levels is by far one of the most frustrating things to setup.

the shocks they're all messy and you have to have so much oil and springs

suspension

It would have to be, camber link location.

TIRES..............AFFORDING THEM!

i think setting up the shocks on my cars is the hardest to up. Once i get them set up right though my t3 floats over the track like an angel.

The shocks, The tires, The roll center.

I race on a large, flat European figure "eight" course with some other racers winding out our tricked out nitro DS's hopped up for the hard Georgia clay, I find that in this type of racing, aerodynamics/downforce play a very tricky role in the setup category.
