1998 Question of the Week:

"How does the winter season affect your R/C racing?"

I live in TEXAS so unless it gets REALLY cold I will keep racing at my local outdoor track. It has been raining alot lately in Austin, so we haven't been racing as much as usual. A warm winter would be nice.

Mostly wait it out, but I do drive my cars in the snow.

I throw some dirthawgs on my GT and sling snow all winter.

I go racing indoors at Ovaitt's R.C. Speedshop in Traverse City Michigan. I race Sedan, Truck and/or Buggy On a carpeted road course. Our offroad track closed last spring but we are trying to open a new one somewhere.

from NYC... get a new body, leave the windows in, water proof all the electronics, lean out the engine in the GT and yank it UP. saves fuel too...

great time to tune up the chassis with the money from shoveling snow

I usually race indoors anyway at Hawks of Sacramento. With it being winter and all maybe the guys that race out doors will come to the indoor tracks and improve the turn out!!! Maybe this winter I will finally beat Bryce Beaver!! "THE ARTIST"

We usually go indoors but now, who knows, the new owner of our track can never get anything together right, so well probably end up having to drive to for about an hour and a half to race at the closest offroad indoor track, so no more dirt oval untill the summer, oh well I guess.
X------------

the only trac in Abilene, TX is an outdoor one so i try to race whenever i can in the off season

Well winter is my favorite time of year. I do a thorough overhaul of my car and barricade it with anything i can find, then i go outside and build a snow track in my front yard. If your gonna try this make sure all electronics even motor are protected and if you have a second less used off road vehicle use it instead of your racing machine.

unfortunately i have no choice but to wait it out :(

The winter doesn't affect racing here because I live in Arizona. TEAM ASSOCIATED RULES!!!!!

right now i'm racing at so cal raceway. march or april i am moving to las vegas. as long as it not raining in those months. i will be able to race outdoors.

indoors

well here in va beach we have 2 tracks 4 hours away so me and me boys will be tooling out to coopers r/c, and Atlantic r/c unfortunately we travel all year round for the comp. our local track is a joke there are 4 guys maybe on the lead lap in stock and no one will run mod. so it's travel as the norm for us snow or sun!!!!

Well I have to go indoors since the weather gets very cold. When I go indoors I run my NEW RC12L3 and have had very good luck with it. Can't wait till spring!!!!!!!

It give me another reason why I can't cut the grass so I can make my GT faster. Next year I win. WA. weather suck time to build a boat. Lew

I have just completed the conversion of my NDS into a Nitro Buggy. I took the NDS added a truck kickup plate, shocks and towers, various RC10 parts, tires, Traxxas nitro buggy body, etc... sealed the electrics in balloons so I don't have to stay out of the rain or mud when the urge hits me. Now the problem is finding someone crazy enough to race with me in the rain. Other than that, my friends and I occasionally make the trek up to Hometown Hobbies in Vancouver, WA where they have a very good indoor dirt track.

i take out my clodzilla4 and have some fun in the snow!!!

It doesn't affect me because once in a while I go and race indoor and have fun.

I would really like to go indoors, but do to some stupid shop owners in Fresno, California, the only indoor off-road track closed down in Fresno, so I would have to say that I just wait it out-JDV Fresno California-racer

I haven't raced much. It isn't the weather. Someone has my batts and good motors. Anyway, I would race in cold weather. It is COOL!!!!

I drive cross country in a 18 wheeler with my cars with me. I try to find any tracks still racing. I live in FL, so when I am home we race year'round.

Go inside and pound carpet !!!

winter doesn't always stop me. I like to mark off an area to setup cones where there is no footsteps to get hung up in.

i wait it out, here in the northwest is always raining. it's lame but i don't have a choice, so right now i just get the GT gasser in top condition for the coming summer.

i live in saudi arabia and now that winter is here it's better because my batteries can finally cool down on my T3 T3 rules!!!

I´m living in Austria, Europe, and I have to be prepared for 5-6 snowy months. The only possibility that I have is to take my RC10-GT and riding some lonely parks and BMX-tracks in my neighborhood. The low temperatures are great for a cool running engine.

I'm from Michigan and I would say that the winter IS the RC racing season, although I race year around it seems like there is more interest during the winter in the summer racing has to compete with softball, vacations, going to full scale races, the beach, ect. ect. You guys should think of making a carpet conversion for the T-3 people around here would go nuts!

The cold weather will certainly affect our outdoors racing. There is an indoor track 2 1/2 hours away .

Here in Fl. we don't get too much winter, so I'll be able to continue racing sedans even through winter. Just go a little lighter on the oil and springs, throw on the tire warmers, then straight out to race!
SM

here in south jersey we run out door off road till the snow falls. about jan-feb and indoor carpet road course. sadans aand 1/12 scale till april

all i have to do is put some protection over my electronics and other stuff like that and go out in the snow for some serious backyard bashing! RC Adict

Here in Fla. we have to cope with it. We might have to use a softer compound tire on the asphalt, on off-road maybe long pants instead of shorts, oh yea! assoc. vehicles!

Well, there aren't many tracks where I live (none within 2hrs. drive) so I usually spend the winter on the bench doing testing, upgrades, maintenance, etc... THANX!

I do my best to "waterproof" my cars and carry-on! I race mostly on-road so there are plenty of indoor tracks (especially here in the rainy NW) but I do still enjoy "RC for FUN" around the neighborhood or at the local school whatever, and things like silicon seal and the invincible DUCT TAPE have become my friends...

Indoor 1/12 is the best practice for 1/8 onroad. However racing on the computer and the Playstation is always ranked very highly on the winter season hit list.

Winter effects my car by making the plastic parts crack or break easier then in summer. During the summer I drive outdoors in parking lots, and off road, but in the winter I race at a local track on a dirt oval.

wrap your electronics in saran wrap and do some winter driving

buy new parts, fix, rebuild, and upgrade your car for the next season.

Indoors, nothing stops me from racing

I would just go to indoor racetracks, (such as Race Prep Raceway in southern California) than wait it out a whole winter.

I live in Southern California and the weather is always the same, Great. Not too many days it rains but if it does I run my Kyosho MP-5 in the puddles and mud. Gromitdodg

I like to drive cross country because I like to travel and it isn't that bad if you stay out of the rain and drive safely

I hate the winter when i can't find an indoor track! The indoor track i used to attend closed for good so it looks like i'll wait it out. B3 rules!!!!!!!

Simple, race indoors!! Long Island Raceway in New York is an indoor off-road facility. I actually run on-road gas touring cars in the summer and off-road, indoors, in the winter!!

Mark T

Go to SoCal Raceway.... How can you beat pit tables, chairs, AC, transponders, ECT... ???

The winter doesn't have an effect on my racing. Instead of racing outdoor and indoor I race just indoor. It is nice having an outdoor and indoor track near you.

I go and race indoors. My dad has to drive me two hours away though so I only get to race about once a month-Drew

Usually were I race (indoor Off-road) the racing action grows during the winter. I think that the people usually come out of the wood work during Winter. I hope that it is the same for your area.

Brett Wells Dallas/Fort-worth Area.

I Just wait till the snow is real frozen on top and drive on top of it (It's slick but fun and teaches you to be gentle with the throttle and steering)

I usually try to wait it out. But during the winter I also save my money for my annual new engine for my GT. I also clean and fix it up just so I can get it dirty and messed up come April.

It rains a lot, so going to indoor tracks (which, incidentally, are crosscountry) is a big help. Southern Cali.

Us psycho "GT" truck racers like to wrap our receiver pack and receiver with balloons and run a 6" hard rubber line off of the carb with a water blocker on the filter to keep it clear of any large puddles ... and then go have a ball!!!!!!!

DRIVE CROSS-COUNTRY

I race in northern Missouri, there is a 100ft by 75ft indoor off road and oval dirt track, also an oval ozite carpet track 90ft by 75ft indoors, its the finest facility ive seen, NO worries about weather, plenty of pit space with full electric , hobby store on site and a refreshment stand. racing is fun and getting more competitive all the time.

We don't do anything much different here except more people show up. Our track is indoors all the time so it isn't affected by the weather.

This is when my season starts! I race indoor oval pan cars in the winter, and work all summer long to support my hobby!

I race on a bad ass indoor track all year long in a warehouse with huge heaters.

I drive my T3 in the snow

On snowy days I wait it out but, during sunny days I practice. Since I drive off-road I can make big jumps out of snow without the mess of dirt.
-Mike Esler Cherry Hill, NJ

i race indoors
