1998 Question of the Week:

"What are the pros and cons of rebuildable stock motors?"

its all pros and no cons. among serious racers, the level of performance will go up. for the rest, only the price will go up.

Pro: may be cheaper overall for non-serious racers and "backyard bashing".
Con: I don't believe it'll be cheaper for real serious stock racers. By the time the arm needs replacing the magnets and bushing will already be worn out as well.

I see no cons. This is another breakthrough in motor technology that should be accepted by all organizations (Yes, even the one that's name appears on the can). I think it will be a ROARing success. (sorry)

pros: a rebuildable stock motor can last a lifetime
cons: some of the strict tracks rules are against that

There are nothing but pros! You can recut the arm Legally, and save money! instead of buying 4 or 5 motors to get that KILLER stock! I am all for this and hope roar approves it ASAP

I've seen a few people crying about the Rebuildable motors and I can't understand why. It's way harder to cheat if everything's out in the open! Being able to replace the armature is way more economical. Only having one lathe is also a plus.
The only legitimate complaints I've heard are that it will be more tempting to cheat, and people who get caught cheating usually quit racing all together. Personally I think that if the cheaters quit that's also a plus.

pros: you could open them and clean them and make them run like a brand spanking new motor.
cons: well the shoes are pretty [bad] but for stock motors it would take away the fun of having a non openable stock motor.

The Pros of a rebuildable stock motor are: the ease of maintenance and just buying the parts you need to repair a motor instead of a whole new motor. The Cons would be: People attempting to cheat using a different armature than a stock one, Or Track owners not checking motors for cheaters. krkroupa

I think there are both pros and cons to having a rebuildable stocker, but the pros outweigh the cons. Pros: More economical for club racers and people just running for fun. Just needs a cleaning, new $3 brushes, and another $10 armature to run like new again. Or better yet, just take it to a guy at your LHS and have the comm cut for free! Cons: People can cheat. Some race directors don't check for that stuff. This will just make it easier for those losers to do it.

In keeping the cost of racing down a little it might be alright, most racers that run stock classes do not turn their own motors, and pay to have it done. I think it should be an out of the box motor. I have seen both standard and tuned motors, the latter should be left out as when the purchaser decides to rebuild would he/she be satisfied with the motor/manufacturer if the motor was not on an even par w/the tuned motor. All the ROAR rules on stock motors, what would come of them. Herman

No cons, except that I'll want to work on it twice as much!! I have no doubt ROAR will approve it. Reedy, Orion, and others are producing one, or are in pre-production and if all these motor smart guys are making them, no worries! They know what they're doing. Plus, ROAR is stamped on the can. Kinda' be silly if it wasn't approved, don't ya think??? ~EZ

Pro u can cut the motor on a mod lathe Dustin Davis Hamilton, Oh

there are no cons!! they give a longer life and are easier to tech!!

Pro: It's hard to cheat. Con: It's hard to cheat.

Well you can buy parts for your rebuildable motor that cost half as much as a brand new motor . But with a rebuildable some racers could cheat .

a pro to rebuildable stock motors is that it could be cleaned out more thoroughly and rebuilt with precision. A con to this would be that people would try and cheat, using these new motors.

The cost of replacing your motors would be less because you would only have to replace one part. Also when you have that one killer motor it can be fixed and you don't have to go buy twelve more to get one of equal performance
