Maifield Dominates Cactus Classic With LRP Brushless

Event: Cactus Classic
Location: Scottsdale R/C Speedway—Scottsdale, AZ
Dates: March 16-18, 2007
Website: www.race-srs.com

Synopsis:

For 1:10 electric off-road racing the Cactus Classic has turned into the premier event in the United States. With world champions in attendance such as Masami Hirosaka, Ryan Cavalieri, Neil Cragg, Mark Pavidis, Billy Easton, and Atsushi Hara, this was not just your average lonely race in the desert.

With 2007 being a Worlds year for electric off road, many teams looked at the Cactus Classic as a warm-up for that event. The abrasive blue groove surface at Scottsdale R/C Speedway is similar to the Japanese track hosting the IFMAR World Championships later this year with similar tires working at each track. Teams from around the world descended on the abnormally hot Arizona track to test themselves against each other in hopes of gaining a leg up on the competition.

Throughout qualifying Ryan Maifield put on a show in the 2WD Modified and Truck Modified classes by top qualifying both highly competitive classes. Maifield’s secret weapon was doing the huge quad in front of the driver’s stand. With his LRP brushless equipment, Maifield was heard more than once commenting that it was easier to just do the jump than settle for the double-double. With the brushless system, it is much easier to control the pitch of the vehicles in the air due to the incredible torque and low rotating weight of the motor. This allowed Ryan to land the jump at the perfect trajectory more often than other competitors.

Not to be outdone, teammate Ryan Cavalieri pressured Maifield the entire event. These two drivers checked out from the competition and put on a show not soon forgotten. In the end, Maifield took his LRP Brushless powered B4 and T4 to the winner’s circle, marking the first major off-road win for brushless.
