Synopsis:
Only a short distance from famous Mount Rainer, Seattle Indoor Raceway (SIR)
in Washington State hosted this year’s ROAR Paved Onroad Nationals. SIR took
over the event after the original host was unable to fulfill its commitment.
SIR is an indoor asphalt track with a unique track layout. The way the
building is shaped there was tight constraints on the layout, but the SIR
crew did an awesome job of using the entire space and creating a fun layout
that had a tremendous amount of grip.
In qualifying, Team Associated/Reedy driver Sean Cochran took his Factory
Team TC5 to the TQ position in both rounds 1 and 2 of Stock Touring. With
zero points total, it would be tough for anyone else to take the TQ
position, especially in the highly contested Stock Touring car class. In the
19-turn class, Associated/ Reedy/ LRP teammates Keven Hebert and Kyle
Skidmore challenged 2x Reedy Race winner Josh Numan for the TQ position. At
the end of qualifying, Hebert sat second on the grid with Skidmore in 4th.
In the Modified Touring class, Team Associated qualified three drivers in
the “A” final. Making the “A” final for Associated were Ryan Cavalieri
(6th), Rick Hohwart (7th) and Tommi Torikka (10th). This was as many places
as several other manufacturers in attendance placed.
Made popular at the previous Reedy Race, all competitors in the modified “A”
final used only 5 cells. The tight SIR track combined with the powerful
motors made the reduced power of 5 cells flow around the track with more
corner speed and less wear on tires and parts. If you haven’t given 5 cells
a try in touring car, we suggest it. Just gear up 2-3 teeth and compare lap
times…you may be surprised by the results.
In the main events, Sean Cochran brought home the Stock Touring National
title for the TC5 with wins in both A1 and A3. This marked the first ROAR
National title for the TC5 and continues its impressive list of wins since
it’s release. In the 19-turn class, Keven Hebert finished second on the
podium, just shy of the victory. Modified Touring was highlighted by Rick Hohwart, who took his LRP/Reedy brushless powered TC5 to the 4th position
overall. A great result considering where he started on the grid and how
difficult the track was to pass on.
On behalf of all the racers, “Thank you, SIR,” for stepping up and putting on
a great event. Doug and his fellow SIR crew can be proud of the event and
hopefully it won’t be the last at Seattle Indoor Raceway.
