This article is in response to several requests for converting an RC10GT to an
RC10NDS. It is possible to change an RC10GT into an RC10 Nitro DS. The only
major difference is that the converted GT's wheelbase will be about ¼" longer. This
is because the Nitro DS chassis is about the same amount shorter at the front of
the chassis. It is feasible to cut the RC10GT chassis down, but it's not
recommended for the average hobbyist.
Start with the #8089 RC10DS electric conversion kit. This kit will give you most of the parts you need, leaving you to purchase only a few parts that are different for the Nitro version of the DS. The following parts are those that are different for the Nitro DS than what are used in the electric DS or GT.
Exhaust manifold #8910 (discontinued). (The stock GT manifolds will hit the tires when the wheels are moved closer. (Optional the #8912 sport muffler can also be used).
Rear bulkhead #7526 (The GT rear bulkhead has been updated with rear anti-roll bar mounts. The old bulkheads can be modified by making rear anti-roll bar mounts.)
Rear shock strut #8873 (this is the stock Nitro DS rear shock strut which is designed to bolt onto the #7526 rear bulkhead).
Spur gear #8916, #8918, #8920 (due to the smaller tire diameter you will need different spur gears. These are the three currently available that we recommend. Sizes are 56, 58 & 60 in the order shown).
Clutch bell #8902 or #8904 (these are the two clutch bells currently available for the Nitro DS. They are 22 tooth and 24 tooth respectively).
Rear anti-roll bar kit #8875 (it may be possible to modify the rear anti-roll bar from the conversion kit but we have not had time to try it.).
Front steering block #8814 (While the steering blocks and axles from the GT will
work they make the car to aggressive on the steering. The #8814 steering block
is a trailing axle design which makes the car easier to drive.
Front axle #6219 (the #8814 steering block uses the original RC10 front axle
which is a trailing axle design).
The conversion kit comes with tires but the compound in the conversion do not work well on the Nitro version. We recommend using the #8886 and #8896 "G" compound tires instead. This is the compound included in the Nitro DS kits.
For those who want to make the modified GT to the exact dimensions of the Nitro
DS the chassis is #8815.
I found an adapter that will allow you to put street touring foam tires on a GT or T3. The manufacturer is C&M, part #3012, (801) 974-0869.
