FAQ

What glow plug should I use?

We recommend the #MC59 glow plug. It is a short plug, even though it is approximately .030" longer than other short plugs on the market. But it's not as long as the traditionally-termed long plugs. Its temperature rating is considered Cold/Medium.

When it comes to plug design, no written industry standard is followed. Each plug manufacturer designs its plugs based on what they believe will create the best durability and performance. So the differences between plugs can be considerable, such as: short plug's length, type of electrode, and the thickness, length, and composition of the wire used for the coil. All these factors affect a glow plug's temperature. Other factors affecting the glow plug include the size of the hole in which the wire is installed; the type of plating used on the glow plug housing, and the material of the glow plug's housing.

What clutch bell and spur gear would be good if I want a faster takeoff and faster top end?

Is there any to get my truck to stop blowing apart my shocks? When I drive it and jump it blows the shocks apart.

I have a question about the slipper pegs. I race the truck weekly with smaller tires and every 3 weeks I have to replace the slipper pegs.

What are the first best upgrades to do with the truck?

My MGT pull start broke, string and spring. Using a longer pull start string will mean the over enthusiastic amongst us nitro r/c users will not be pulling the string out anymore.

On page 10, your user guide shows a different part no. for the clutch bell bearing.

What is the best way to protect the cooling head from rolling or flipping?

How much of a gain do you see by adding the FT steering kit?

Is the MGT a good car for a first-timer?

I just read your postings for the first time and have never heard such whining in all my life ...

Do you consider monster trucks as a viable race platform?

My shocks are very squeaky.

I was told that I needed to install a fail safe micro unit. Is this a good idea?

I added a second gas tank and hosed it in series with the first tank. Here's how.

Do you know of anyone who makes a roll cage that I won't need to drill to install?

My forward and reverse gear will not shift when my motor is running. But it will shift fine when it is not running.

78 I ran water on the whole truck to clean some dirt and mud. Will that mess it up?

79 I would like to know if any one makes a better spur gear. Mine keeps melting the centers out.

80 Can you tell me the inner diameter of the MGT Springs?

81 When I plug the battery lead into channel 4 to bypass the BEC circuit it speeds the steering up. Why does this happen?

82 There is fuel leaking out around the header coming out of the engine. Will this hurt the engine or cause loss in performance.

83 How much power does the new MGT 4.6 have?

84 I have no power to the back wheels for the Monster GT.

85 What pipe would you recommend if i want more torque?

86 I started off experiencing drive train hesitation when I was getting on the throttle. Now the slipper clutch just spins and the truck goes nowhere.

87 I read that the transmission should shift into second gear after 12 - 15 feet in the manual. the truck shifts into second after about 20 - 25 feet. It took a while to get to top speed.

88 My truck turns very little it worked fine for the first run and turned real good, now it barely turns.

89 Would I be able to drop in the LRP Z.28 with a bone-stock .21 MGT?

90 How do I upgrade my MGT .21 to the .28 engine?

91 My MGT drive shaft CVD assembly works loose in about 5 mins or longer.

92 I put some 8 1\2 inch tires on the MGT 4.6 SE and now it seems like they are too heavy so the take-off is quite slow.

93 Is there a difference in the gear ratio or tooth number for the gears in the 4.6 and .21 transmissions?

94 I'm looking for roll cages for my Monster GT 4.60.

Answers

1 Richard Saxton's Monster GT had a Robo brake disc and an aluminum steering kit.

The "Robo-Disc" Vented Disc Brake is part number #25410, and the steering kit is #25395.

2 What is the best way to protect the cooling head from rolling or flipping? I would like a roll cage. but they are too hard to find and too much!

One of the old tricks it to use zip ties. Pull it through the holes for the screws at the top, and then where the locker part of the zip tie faces up and towards the outer edge of the engine head, trim off the excess. Then if you flip or roll over without the body, the zip tie will drag on the ground, not the head.

3 How much of a gain do you see by adding the FT steering kit? The stock steering servo is too slow for racing and was wondering if it would be better to by a faster servo or this steering kit?

You will see an overall improvement in stability and durability. If you want to increase your servo speed simply pull the battery lead out of your receiver from the (batt) plug and put it into channel 4-- that will bypass the BEC circuit and increase power. The stock servo has 111 oz .of torq, and a speed of .16, so there is plenty there. Also going from the 4 double AA’s to a 5 cell rechargeable receiver pack will be a big benefit also.

4 I keep melting the teeth off of my spur gears.. my clutch bell is getting as hot as the engine. Is it normal?

No, it is not. Make sure that when the truck is in neutral that you can roll the truck freely. Then pull the clutch bell off and check for clutch shoe wear, and clean the inside of the clutch bell of any oil or grease.

5 What servos come with the MGT and what are the torque ratings for the servos?

The steering has 111 oz. of torque, and the throttle and shifting has about 60oz. of torque.

6 Under "normal" running conditions, how often should the diffs be regreased or "gone through?"

The diffs are pretty indestructible. Unless you are having a problem you may just check them every 4-6 months.

7 Is the MGT good for a first-timer?

It’s not whether you are a first-timer or not that makes a difference. It’s whether you’ll have the patience to learn how to work with a nitro engine that matters.

8 Is it possible for me to get a better steering servo for my MGT? It is a little slow.

There are several servos out there that can give you increased performance. Airtronics makes the 359 (I think), which has 200 oz./ inches of torque and it’s much faster than the stock servo.

9 I have burned approx, 6 Tanks of fuel in it. About 3/4 through the 6th tank of fuel I noticed that the steering would not centre itself.

Try this: take the servo saver off the servo itself. Then turn on all your radio gear and set your steering trim to the center position. Then reattach the servo saver onto the servo in the position closest to having the wheels pointed straight ahead.

10 I would like to know what I can do to change the speed of the truck (to make it faster)?

You can change the gearing on the truck. Going to a higher numbered spur gear will give you more torque but less top end. The clutch bell is just the opposite - more teeth will give you more top end. You can go to a smaller spur and then go up 1 or 2 teeth on the clutch bell.

11 Is there a complete replacement screw set available for the MGT?

No replacement screw set is available.

12 What is the difference between the Thunder Tiger MTA4 and the Associated Monster GT?

The MTA4 is the Thunder Tiger version of the MGT. Please contact Thunder Tiger for the changes (if any) they made to the truck.

13 The bearing behind my clutch bell exploded today. I looked the part number up, but cant find it in the catalog.

The number you will use is #25237. The old number #2320 had a flanged and non flanged bearing.

14 What settings can you tell me that would make my mgt go its fastest and would not damage anything?

If you want more top end speed, get a clutch bell with more teeth. If you want faster acceleration, get a clutch bell with fewer teeth.

15 Where can I find parts & optional parts here in Asia?

The MGT is not selling in Asia, so you won’t find parts in that area.

16 I have had problems with the rear CVA cup connecting the tranny to the rear drive axle. The pin in the cup keeps wanting fall out.

Have you cleaned the parts with cleaner before applying the thread lock?

17 Do you offer parts for diff separately yet? My drive cups and axle bones are worn bad.

Sorry, the diff is sold to us as a complete unit. So that is the only way we can provide it to our customers.

18 I noticed a lot of little bubbles inside the engine. Is that proof of an air leak?

Start your engine; if you can cover the air intake opening and the truck still runs, then you have an air leak. In such an event you would send the engine to the address on the home page for repair.

19 The reason the nut keeps loosening is most likely the Hex Nut Pin is missing.

On the axle there is a hole that should have a short, small pin in it. That pin then holds the hex nut that holds the wheel.

20 What is the transmission drive ratio for low gear and high gear?

The differential ratio is 3.31.

21 What gap measurement should be between the disc and plates? I think the screws may have backed out.

Between the disk and plates the distance should be about the width of a piece of paper.

22 Should I change the brake linkage shaft to a different hole in the servo arm?

Do not change the hole on the arm; instead, replace the spring with a piece of fuel tubing. That alone will give better braking action.

23 Should after-run oil be used at the end of each day?

No, after-run oil should only be used if you are not going to use the truck for a while. I would say if you are not going to use the truck for a couple weeks or more then use after-run oil.

24 After I broke my MGT in, I have never gotten the truck to shift even after many attempts at adjusting the transmission.

(continued) I made some small modifications and it resulted in a perfect shifting pattern and would like to share what I have done to correct this problem. The adjustment I found at 7 1/2 turns still did not make it shift but also the set screw was just about to fall out at that setting.
1. Take apart transmission and take out the 2 speed shaft and gears.
2. Remove small pin, black collar, metal gear and another small pin.
3. Push rod out so that you have pn 25016 and 25015 in your hand.
4. Remove adjustment set screw and spring. Do not lose small ball bearing.
5. With very light touch, snip spring just below where it begins to open up. (top and bottom of spring are tightly wound and center isn't snip just below that at one end)
6. Then take a small tool and expose the metal foot that engages the second gear and lightly flatten rounded tip so that it sets better against the pins it locks into when shifting.
7. Install ball bearing spring and set screw.
8. Turn in all the way and back out approximately 5 1/2 turns.
You will notice that the set screw stays in the area where it feels tight and you can fine tune it from there. While apart, inspect gears and make sure pn 25015 is secure to the shaft. There is a flat spot in shaft for the set screw to rest upon and use locktight (blue or red, what ever you prefer). As well known you must then put everything back together and try it out. I have the Wasp .26 in my ride and it is tuned to 235 deg and moves like a raped ape. Have fun and hope my trials and tribulations have helped someone who is having similar troubles.

25 What is the operating speed and output torque of the steering servo (part #29126) for the Monster GT at 4.8 and 6 volts?

We have the readings at 6.0v-- it is .19 sec and 111.0 oz. inches of torque.

26 The larger motors (.24-.28) still mount in the same space as a .21. Here is a tip for anybody who needs help with the CVD builds.

1st step, CLEAN all parts that will get thread lock. I don't mean wipe them off, I mean nitro cleaner, or soak them in denatured alcohol. Once that's done, wipe any remaining residue off, and make sure its all dry.
2nd step. Without getting grease on the threads, apply a small amount of black grease (ae brand) to the pivot points of the CVD. Not a lot! Just enough to reduce friction, and stress.
3rd step. Assemble the CVD, and apply a GENEROUS portion of RED ( yes I said RED) thread lock to the grub screw. I also apply Loctite to the threads inside the coupling.
VERY IMPORTANT:
Before you put that grub screw in, make sure you have the flat spot on that pin right where you need it. When you tighten this grub screw down, ONLY tighten up to the pin. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN IT!!! They will crack! Let that truck sit over night for the loctite to set. I did this, and haven't had ANY problems yet. It took a while to figure them out, but i got it. They are sensitive to build, but they are durable when built properly.

27 The air filter is a two stage so it appears that the benefit is that you only oil the inside sponge and leave the outside air filter sponge dry. Is this a correct assumption?

Yes, you are correct, although some people will oil both filters, which is fine as well.

28 What are all the signs of it changing gears?

You will hear a change in engine note as the engine note drops slightly before picking up the revs again.

29 Steering and braking is horrible. What can I do?

Here is what you can do. Take the battery lead out of the battery slot on the receiver and put it in the channel 4 slot on the receiver. You will be surprised.

30 I was wondering what Nitro fuel you recommended for the MGT.

A 20% nitro blend fuel for cars is the fuel you should be using.

31 If I go higher on the diff lube viscosity, what impact will that have on the MGT?

It will be like tightening the diff in a ball diffed car.

32 What effect on the MGT does moving the shocks on the arms and shock tower have?

The effect will be an overall softer suspension when moving the bottom of the shocks in.

33 I wanted to know if there is a better manual with directions to take apart the truck and put it back together.

We added extra pages to the original MGT manual to cover this (under Kit Tips & Help):
http://www.teamassociated.com/racerhub/techhelp/faq.nitro.htm

34 Let's say I took good care of my engine but it wore out. What will it take to rebuild it to like new again?

The easiest thing to do when it is worn out is to take advantage of our Engine Replacement Policy: http://aedownloads.com/pdf/replacement_pol.pdf

35 I want titanium parts.

Parts can be found at www.hardcoreracing.com. They sell a good size amount of titanium parts and accessories for the MGT. Their is a variety of colors and parts to choose from.

36 I'm looking for a full assembly manual for piece by piece assembly of the MGT.

We’ve updated the original manual to include more assembly steps. Download the online manual and see if the extra steps are what you need. Unfortunately, we don’t have a full assembly manual for this MGT. Go to the home page and click on “Manuals.”

37 The truck has never shifted into second gear after two weeks.

You will want to back the two speed set screw out until the two speed shifts. You may need to go as far out as 7 turns.

38 I would like to know the specs on the steering servo? Torque and Speed.

The specs are 111 oz./inch of torque and a speed of. 19sec.

39 During and after break in will not shift into second gear.

Back the two speed adjustment out farther (counter clockwise) to get the truck to shift.

40 I am on the 6th tank and have this problem with the tranny shifting.

If you are only on the 6th tank of gas your engine is not broken in. Your engine will not be broken in until you have run roughly 12 tanks of gas through it. Then if it is still not shifting, back the two-speed adjustment screw out a little at a time until it does.

41 How long will the engine last if you take really good care of it? Is it rebuildable?

It is rebuildable. When properly maintained the engine should give you several months of trouble free running when being run on a weekly basis.

42 Will the shocks #1600 for the T-Maxx fit on the Monster GT?

That shock set will not fit the MGT properly.

43 How tall are the tires?

The tires are 6 5/8 inches in diameter.

44 When using T-Maxx size tires, how much gearing do we need to get back up to speed?

Either 18/52 or 17/49. With the 18/52 you might have to do some mod work on the gear shroud.

45 I was wondering how long does a stock tank of fuel last.

There are too many variables to give an exact time. Somewhere between 12 to 20 minutes.

46 Replacement 25013. Is there a difference between the white and black versions of this gear?

No, the material is the same; we have the white gears here so we know what we have sent out under warranty.

47 I keep reading that the MGT was not even designed by AE

You could say the resulting MGT is a partnership between AE and Thunder Tiger. We have done the majority of the design work on the truck. We worked long and hard to make this truck worthy of the Team Associated name. We are very proud to have our name associated with this truck!

48 Is the MGT 1:8 scale or is it just big?

No scale is associated with this truck, since it wasn’t modeled after any existing monster truck. It is simply BIG.

49 I was going to buy a drill for the drill start because its a feature I would like to use. Just wondering how much power I'll need.

A simple 12v drill will be plenty -- you don’t need some super HD drill.

50 I'm wondering how to start with a drill starter.

Pull the pull start one time to make sure that the motor is not hydro locked and then use the drill start.

51 Will any of the savage bodies fit? I know that they are larger than typical T-Maxx bodies.

Our bodies are definitely larger. We won’t say that it’s impossible to make any body fit. With ingenuity and work, you can make any body fit.

52 What fuel do you recommend to break in the engine with?

You should break the engine in on the same fuel you will be running in the vehicle. The norm is to run 20% nitro content.

53 How much torque does the stock steering servo have anyway?

The stock steering servo is 111oz.

54 Will it be possible to remove the reverse from the MGT tranny? Will it make it faster?

There is a forward only option available (#25415, retail $15.99), but I don’t think it will increase the overall top end speed.

55 I would like purchase a rechargeable NiMH hump pack for my new MGT. Which do you recommend?

Reedy #615, retail cost is $24.99.

56 When the MGT is raised up all the way, what is the ground clearance in the very center?

Overall suspension travel is 3.42.”

57 I have had it for a couple of days and the steering seems to be really lagging.

If you are running the 4 AA batteries the steering is a bit sluggish if the truck is setting still. Check into get a 5 cell rechargeable hump pack, Reedy has them (#615, $24.99), and you will probably see more power to the servos with that setup. You will need to get a charger for the pack. If you get one from Hitec or Futaba it will work with your transmitter also, if you get rechargeable batteries for it.

58 How much fuel does the stock MGT tank hold?

MGT tank size is 150cc.

59 What's the advantage of a #25415 Forward-Only kit?

Quicker response, faster acceleration, and higher top speed.

60 I hear good and bad about the WASP 26 for the MGT.

We've had customers put that particular engine in the truck with great results.

61 What clutch bell and spur gear would be good if I want a faster takeoff and faster top end?

The stock settings are balanced for fast takeoff and top end. If you want more top end, you’ll sacrifice takeoff speed. If you want more takeoff speed, you’ll sacrifice top end. It’s just like a teeter-totter--both ends can’t be in air at the same time. To make adjustments, click on the link above, "setup sheet with tuning tips."

62 Is there any to get my truck to stop blowing apart my shocks? When I drive it and jump it blows the shocks apart.

Do not fill the shocks so full of oil. That is why you keep blowing them apart.

63 I have a question about the slipper pegs. I race the truck weekly with smaller tires and every 3 weeks I have to replace the slipper pegs.

Try and put all 12 pegs in. That will definitely give you more friction and grab.

64 What are the first best upgrades to do with the truck?

It depends on what you want to accomplish--
... Do you want it to look cool? Get several blue aluminum parts.
... Do you want to go faster? Get a clutch bell with a couple more teeth for higher top end or a clutch bell with fewer teeth for faster acceleration, and avoid aluminum parts.
... Do you want it durable? Get the titanium turnbuckles, and avoid graphite and carbon parts.
... Do you want more tuneability to the track for racing or general stability? Get various springs and shock oils and experiment.

65 My MGT pull start broke, string and spring. Using a longer pull start string will mean the over enthusiastic amongst us nitro r/c users will not be pulling the string out anymore.

I have a better suggestion. Do not pull the cord as you would a lawn mower. Pull with quick, short strokes.

66 On page 10, your user guide shows a different part no. for the clutch bell bearing.

The part number has changed to #25237. The size of the bearing has remained the same, though.

67 What is the best way to protect the cooling head from rolling or flipping? I would like a roll cage but, they are too hard to find and too much!

One of the old tricks it to use zip ties. Pull it through the holes for the screws at the top, and then where the locker part of the zip tie faces up and towards the outer edge of the engine head, trim off the excess. Then if you flip or roll over without the body, the zip tie will drag on the ground, not the head.

68 How much of a gain do you see by adding the FT steering kit?

You will see an overall improvement in stability and durability. If you want to increase your servo speed, simply pull the battery lead out of your receiver from the (batt) plug and put it into channel 4-- that will bypass the BEC circuit and increase power. The stock servo has 111oz of torque and speed of .16, so there is plenty there. Also going from the 4 double AA’s to a 5-cell rechargeable receiver pack will be a big benefit also.

69 Is the MGT a good car for a first-timer?

It’s not whether you are a first-timer or not that makes a difference. It’s whether you’ll have the patience to learn how to work with a nitro engine that matters.

70 I just read your postings for the first time and have never heard such whining in all my life. You people are buying a truck that you take out and abuse and you expect it to never break. Have you gone mad? The fact of the matter is if you are spending your $500.00 bills on something you should know how to deal with little problems, and if you don't know how you should have some money and time put aside to have someone do it for you.

I work for a large Porsche racing team and when we get home from every race our cars are stripped down, checked out thoroughly and put back together with extra care. That is a full size race car and your MGT is a 8th scale monster truck but it also requires the same attention and the same replacement of parts because things do break and that's just how it goes, get used to it!

My MGT gets cleaned and serviced after every use and that is almost enough attention to keep it running flawlessly every time it's out, not to mention all the time spent on the truck at the track. They all like that, all makes and models. They require lots of time and lots of money.

Thank you very much! We really appreciate your comments. People seem to have this mentality that all RC cars are never supposed to break and run forever without maintenance. Did we mention how much we love Porsche?

71 Do you consider monster trucks as a viable race platform? Reason I ask is that you stated earlier that you don't make RTR vehicles for racing ( "racers don't buy RTRs" ) but a lot of people are racing your MGT against the competition, which would lead me to assume that if you do consider it for racing against other Monster trucks, that you may make a kit version like HPI down the road.

People are definitely making the MGT a viable race platform.

72 My shocks are very squeaky.

The squeaky noise you hear is from air in the shocks. Replace the O-rings and refill with fresh oil.

74 I was told that I needed to install a fail safe micro unit. Is this a good idea?

You do not need one but it is a very helpful piece of equipment.

75 I added a second gas tank and hosed it in series with the first tank. In other words, put the pressure line from the muffler to the input of the second tank, connected the output of the second tank to the input of the first tank and then the output of the first tank to the carburetor. This is an EXCELLENT configuration. DO NOT try to put a T-valve to siphon from both tanks simultaneously as this results in pressurization problems and bubbles in your fuel line.

I get 20+ mins of play time with a second fuel tank. Upgrade cost $25 ($21 tank / $3 screws + tax) and Labor of about 30 mins (took my time to drill the holes to mount the tank). HIGHLY RECOMMEND ADDING A SECOND TANK! I jumped it yesterday from a couple bike ramps and I was distancing an average of 33 feet out and 5 feet up! Man I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!

Thanks for the information.

76 Do you know of anyone who makes a roll cage that I won't need to drill to install?

77 My forward and reverse gear will not shift when my motor is running. But it will shift fine when it is not running. When the motor is running it is at a perfect shifting idle.

The truck has to come to a complete stop and the idle has to have dropped enough for proper engagement. Check to make sure that your idle is low enough for this to be accomplished.

78 I ran water on the whole truck to clean some dirt and mud. Will that mess it up?

Water can definitely damage your electrical equipment. Let the parts dry out for 24-48 hours and fire them back up. If you still do not get a response then there is a good chance that they are burnt out.

79 I would like to know if any one makes a better spur gear. Mine keeps melting the centers out.

Try replacing your slipper pegs-- they may be worn out.

80 Can you tell me the inner diameter of the MGT Springs?

The diameter is about 15mm.

81 When I plug the battery lead into channel 4 to bypass the BEC circuit it speeds the steering up. Why does this happen?

The BEC stands for battery eliminator circuit. It is a circuit that allows you to run your car without the need for a receiver pack. In your case you are bypassing the regulator so you get unlimited power to the servo/radio gear. The only bad part is that your receiver pack will run down quicker.

82 There is fuel leaking out around the header coming out of the engine. Will this hurt the engine or cause loss in performance.

Inspect the gasket between the header and the engine and replace if worn.

83 How much power does the new MGT 4.6 have?

The motor has 3.8 hp.

84 I have no power to the back wheels for the Monster GT.

You may have snapped a pin in the rear driveline. Make sure all the drive pins are intact.

85 What pipe would you recommend if i want more torque?

I would get the FT option that brings the pipe off the side of the truck. This in itself will give you more power and torque.

86 I started off experiencing drive train hesitation when I was getting on the throttle. Now the slipper clutch just spins and the truck goes nowhere.

Replace the slipper pegs in the spur gear. You may also want to add all 12 pegs for more holding power and consistency.

87 I read that the transmission should shift into second gear after 12 - 15 feet in the manual. the truck shifts into second after about 20 - 25 feet. It took a while to get to top speed.

If the truck was slow to get up to speed, you might consider leaning the low speed needle out slightly. This will increase your low end response and will also get the truck shifting a little sooner.

88 My truck turns very little it worked fine for the first run and turned real good, now it barely turns.

Make sure that you have not moved the dual rate adjustment. The dual rate adjustment is located on your transmitter next to your thumb. Make sure that the dial is turned up all the way.

89 Would I be able to drop in the LRP Z.28 with a bone-stock .21 MGT?

Yes, the LRP Z.28 engine will fit in the MGT.

90 How do I upgrade my MGT .21 to the .28 engine?

All you need to do is install the engine and exhaust and one part number: #25018. This will install the new two speed pinion made of metal.

91 My MGT drive shaft CVD assembly works loose in about 5 mins or longer.

Be sure you are using RED loctite on the set screw. The blue type will break down and allow the screw to come loose! You could also put some shrink tubing over the cup where the pin comes through so it can’t come out without cutting off the shrink tubing.

92 I put some 8 1\2 inch tires on the MGT 4.6 SE and now it seems like they are too heavy so the take-off is quite slow.

With larger tires on the truck you will want to drop the clutch bell tooth count down 2-3 teeth. You can also install the forward only kit, which will eliminate reverse and provide much better acceleration. The broken pin I can say was more than likely a cause of the larger tires.

93 Is there a difference in the gear ratio or tooth number for the gears in the 4.6 and .21 transmissions?

The only difference is that the 4.60 comes with a 16-tooth clutch bell vs. a 15-tooth.

94 I'm looking for roll cages for my Monster GT 4.60.

Sorry, we do not make a roll cage for the MGT. I found some by typing in the www.Google.com search box: roll bar cage MGT
