West Kent Radio Car Club in Tonbridge hosted Round 1 of the BRCA 1/12th National Series on a challenging layout featuring both fast section and tighter chicanes. Grip levels were good thanks to the fact that the track is used regularly throughout the year.

Saturday’s action saw Team Associated/Reedy driver Keith Robertson take the pole position in the 13.5 class with Reedy factory driver Olly Jefferies taking the pole in the 10.5 Open class.

A very close finish in the 13.5 A-final went Leigh Dibble’s way with Robertson less than .2 seconds behind. Jefferies lead wire-to-wire in the 10.5 final with Reedy teammate Mark Stiles passing David Spashett near the end to steal second place away from the former World Champion.

Moving to Sunday, a fierce battle raged between Reedy-powered drivers Jim Spencer and Keith Robertson in the Sportsman class with Keith eventually claiming the pole position. In the Modified class, Olly Jefferies qualified comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.

The Sportsman final was another classic battle as Keith and Jim broke clear until a misunderstanding with a back marker proved costly for Jim as Keith kept a cool head and drove his 12R5.2 to the win. Jim finished second with Mark Jewitt in third – to secure a Reedy podium lockout.

The Modified final was just starting to show some potential with Olly at the front and in control, until an unfortunate incident resulted in the carpet coming up at the end of the straight.  A quick fix wasn’t enough so the final race results were determined by the driver’s position at the time of the incident. Therefore Olly was declared the winner with Spashett in second and Mark Stiles finishing off an excellent weekend in third.
