Podium Sweep at Spektrum Off-Road Championships

In its 5th year, the Spektrum Off-Road Championships hosted by Trackside Hobbies & Raceway has become one of the "must attend" events of the fall. Located just outside of Milwaukee, Trackside has recently changed ownership and is striving to become one of the most complete facilities in the nation.

2WD buggies are the most popular and widely raced vehicles in the U.S. with the 17.5 class the cornerstone of club programs nationwide. As expected, this class was the most popular at this event with 75 competitors all seeking a power advantage that would give them an edge over the rest of the field.

Nick Achterkirch found that advantage! A combination of excellent driving, a good car setup, and the power of his Reedy Sonic 540 Mach 2 motor propelled his B5M to the pole position and wins in the first two legs of the A-final to secure the overall win. Eli Ezrow, using a borrowed Sonic 540 Mach 2, crossed the line in second with Sean Cochran’s Reedy-powered B5M rounding out the podium positions.

Both Nick and Sean used Reedy’s #602 4100mAh 65C Shorty battery as did Sarah Ann Ernst in the 13.5 4WD Buggy Class. Sarah Ann’s B44.3 was set up in the shorty configuration and equipped with a Sonic 540 Mach 2 13.5 motor. The combination proved lethal and was instrumental in Sarah Ann’s class win from the pole position.

World-famous race announcer Scotty Ernst continued the Reedy team’s winning ways with a victory in the 17.5 2WD Short Course class. Instead of the typical triple A-main format, the Short course classes raced single 7-minute mains. After qualifying on the pole position, Scotty and his Reedy-powered SC10.2 led the A-Main event for the popular win.

Brent Thielke was the winner of the Modified Truck class with his Centro-converted mid-motor T4.2 powered by Reedy’s #314 5800mAH 65C SQ battery, Sonic 540 Mach 2 7.5 motor, and Blackbox 410R ESC. Brent took the early lead in the 7-minute A-Main event and held off TQ man and teammate Cole Tollard for the win.

The Spektrum Off-Road Championships is one of those races on the calendar everyone should attend. With a great facility, fast group of local racers, and a layout that was simple enough to drive, but difficult to go fast on, it's every racer's dream. Thanks to the whole Trackside crew for a great event and we look forward to returning in 2015.
