The Horsham R/C Club hosted the 2015 ROAR Carpet Nationals during the final weekend of March just outside Philadelphia in Horsham, PA. Racers from all over the U.S. were greeted by friendly hosts and one of the finest permanent indoor carpet venues in the country. A challenging layout was created on the high grip carpet surface which put participants’ setup and driving skills to the ultimate test. Thankfully, forgiving barriers and thoughtful dot placement meant that even when mistakes were made and time was lost, little or no car damage resulted.

1/12 Modified, the fastest class and the highlight of the event, featured a field of National champions and World Championship finalists. Team Associated/Reedy factory driver Keven Hébert has made the class his personal playground lately and did not disappoint at the Nats. Even though he suffered some problems in qualifying he managed to set the fastest qualifying time with his Reedy-powered 12R5.2 to capture the pole position for Sunday’s triple A-Main event. Teammates Mike Haynes and Rick Hohwart lined up behind Keven in the second and third grid positions.

Keven’s 12R5.2 was finely balanced and handled consistently from start to finish of each run. In A Main leg one, Keven rocketed away from the field while the other drivers waited for their cars to come in. By the time they did, the lead was insurmountable and Keven cruised to an easy win.

Leg two was no different and with another win, Keven took the overall victory and the National Championship, leaving Mike and Rick to battle it out in leg three to determine the final podium order.

With the title decided and Keven not starting leg three, Mike and Rick led the field away at the tone nose-to-tail and never more than a few seconds apart. Mike drove clean and consistently to win the leg and claim the second position overall. Rick followed Mike home in third less than two seconds behind to complete the podium sweep for the AE/Reedy team.

In the 1/12 13.5 class, Joe Trandell and his 12R5.2 took the overall victory from pole position by winning the first two legs of the main event.

Special thanks to the Horsham R/C Club for hosting this exciting event, to ROAR for running an excellent race program, and to all the competitors who gathered to compete against North America’s best drivers.
