Baker gobbles up win at Big Fat Turkey Race

This past weekend, the 10th annual Big Fat Turkey Race was held in Camarillo, CA. With nice weather in the low 80s, and with just over 130 entries and 18 heats, it was bound to make for a good day of racing. Reedy Team Driver Barry Baker was on hand running in the Modified Touring Car class.

For qualifying on Saturday, Baker started off the day with a TQ in round 1. Unfortunately for Baker, the next two rounds of qualifying would not go as well. Despite his bad luck, Baker qualified fifth overall.

On Main day, Baker showed up with his Reedy-powered car ready to win. Taking the two best combined finishes with one throw-out would decide the overall winner. In A1, Baker got tangled up with another driver while trying to hunt down the leader, so Baker finished in the second spot. In A2, Baker came out swinging. Immediately out of the gate, he passed two drivers to take over the third spot. By lap 4, he took the lead and never looked back.

Coming into A3, it was between Max Kuenning, Baker, and Randy Caster (TC7), for the overall win, with Kuenning with a 3-2, Baker with 2-1, and Caster 1-4. At the start of A3, Caster put a small gap between himself and the second and third spots of Baker and Kuenning. On lap 23, Baker got into some traffic and had to retire early due to a mechanical failure. With the points from A1 and A2, Randy needed a win in A3 to take the overall; but if Kuenning won, it would make for a 3-way tie for the win. At the finish line, Kuenning held on the for the win, forcing a three-way tie.

Coming down to the driver's fastest single Main event as the tie breaker, Baker took the overall, beating Kuenning by only nine-tenths of a second.
