Reedy Success at BRCA 1/12 Nationals Rd. 5

Round 5 of the BRCA 1/12 Nationals took place last weekend, and marked the first time a BRCA national event was held in a large indoor shopping mall. “Thecentre:mk” mall played host to what many have already dubbed “the best 1/12 Nationals for more than 20 years.”  Spectators lined up two to three deep around the 28m x 14m carpet track for the entire weekend, and there were also other exhibits and attractions to engage the public with RC racing. The entire event was streamed live on the Internet, and with commentary provided by John Hindhaugh, a commentary legend for full-size motor racing, it all came together to make for an enthralling spectacle.

Saturday
On Saturday, David Spashett was top qualifier in the LMP12 10.5 Stock class with privateer Matt Varah lined up alongside David on the front row. Factory Reedy team driver Olly Jefferies qualified third on the grid and well in contention for the win. The A final was a race of two halves with the lead trio circulating very closely for the first 4 minutes. Several changes of lead occurred, but at about half distance a coming together between Olly and Dave allowed Matt Varah to pull out into an unassailable lead. Matt crossed the line to take his first-ever BRCA national win, with David and Olly rounding out the podium position. Thanks to fourth- and fifth-place finishes by Mick Farrell and Mark Stiles, Reedy Sonic 540 Mach 2 10.5 motors swept the top five finishing positions!

Sunday
On Sunday, drivers installed their faster motors for the LMP12 Modified class. Olly Jefferies, who clinched the championship at the previous round, demonstrated his speed by qualifying on the pole by more than half a lap over the next fastest competitor. Olly cruised to a comfortable win in the A final. He lapped everyone except Chris Kerswell and Mark Stiles, who waged a race-long battle for second place. Mark held his nerve for the entire race and crossed the line second to make it 1-2 for the Reedy factory duo.

Sunday’s LMP12 Sport class is for motors up to 10.5 turns, so it was effectively the same as the 10.5 Stock class from Saturday. The A final in this class was an absolute belter, with pole-sitter Keith Robertson, Mark Jewitt, and Jim Spencer battling closely for the entire race. Eventually, it was Jim who won with his Reedy power ahead of Keith and Mark.

A huge “thank you” to all of the competitors, organizers, officials, exhibitors, and media professionals for their hard work in making this such a hugely successful event.
